If you always desired to work on your own terms and avoid the 9-5 time, nothing could be better than freelancing (or you want to have something in your part time). For many of us, it becomes a tiring to follow 9-5 timing and not to forget the idiot (most likely) boss who loves to screw up any scene at any given point of time. I am going to discuss why you should prefer freelance career over your regular job.
- Hey I can’t obey Boss (I heard only dogs are controlled by master, not me!!! HUH)
I think this is one of the prime reason why people start on their own because they dont want to be answerable to anyone and love to take responsibility for any bad decision or any mistake. It’s more like your own business where you do everything marketing, Public relation, networking, follwing the ethics, Client management, advertising etc. You can not ignore freelancing if you don’t want to be at the mercy of others for sleeping extra hours or taking extra leave for vacation. There is no reason to smile (even if you are upset with someone) just because performance review day is nearby. So if you dont want others to tell you what you should do and what you should not or how you should do, this perfectly suits you.
- What is this 9-5? It doesn’t go with my style (I am a owl!!!)
There are many guys around (Me too) who never like to get up early in the morning (that too for the reason of going to work). Why can’t I make it 10-6 or may be 11-7 or 1-9 (this suites me well). I wanna sleep late and work till late hours in the night. So if your lifestyle does not permit you to obey the 9-5 timing, think about freelance.
- I hate politics (but it happens everyday in office)
You hate politics but involved in office politics. Whenever your colleague get a chance, they take credit of your hard work or might be putting their hands on your promotion. Your performance appraisal might be affected because your colleague got a better personal relation with your boss (they love licking!!!). It also make sense if you don’t like to work in a team (might be you are not good team player) and you give excellent performance working alone. Hey it does not mean you are going to become frog of a well, you will have ample time to socialize yourself (after all you are going to set your working hours, isn’t it)
- I don’t want to depend on someone else wish
It looks too bad if you don’t get a hike even after your hard effort in your work or you might got a low hike against your expections. (no one loves begging, please give me more). Freelancing empowers you to set your own rates based on your skill and capabilities. If you are good in delivering and meeting deadline, your client will be happy to pay a premium against the market rates.
- I don’t want to eat burger, I prefer Pizza with extra cheese topping
When you are working, you are dependent on your company with respect to what kind of project you are going to work for or the client whom you have to work for. Might be that client is a bulls*** guy eating your head and paying less but you are not left with enough choice except to say “OK Sir, let me try this way out”. You love to work on flash but you are forced to work on photoshop assignment (that’s what you got from your company) or you might be doing software coding (though you loved to have some web development project). So if you are looking for flexibility to choose your own project, don’t want to deal with nonsense clients, it makes sense to freelance over regular job.
- Hey I love working in undergarments…
No problem, you can do freelancing at the comfort of your home. No one is going to be there around, you can work even without undergarments if you wish
- I am home sick
Though office timing are 9 to 5, you need to leave home by 8 AM and you don’t reach home before 8 PM (sometimes very late night). In the morning you cant see your kid because they would have gone to school and in the evening they would have slept by the time you are at home. This also could be a good excuse to venture into freelancing career (if you wanna be with your family 24 X 7)
It does not mean that freelancing is a happy-go-career and you should leave your day job right now to start off this. I have noted only on the positive side but there are negatives too (like any other business) and you need to weigh yourself properly before entering into this career. You need to make sure if you are fit for freelancing.
As mentioned in the beginning, you will be in charge for everything like Marketing, Public relation, Networking, Work Ethics, Client management, Advertising and Promotion etc. It requires lot of discipline and hard work in the beginning to make your career in a set path. Once established you might get lot of free time for other stuff. So you need to be good at time management. Other tips and tricks will be explain in followed post.
To start with, you should take up some freelance work along side your regular job (in part time) and measure your performance. There are many individuals who carry both the guns with them. Wish you a happy freelancing
